What I expected from northern Alabama was more of the muggy, humid deep-south-ness of the preceding states of Louisiana and Arkansas. What I received was an absolutely lovely early-summer climate lush with trees and birds, wonderful people, quaint farmhouses, fields that would soon be rife with cotton, and miles and miles of sunshine. A soft sun shower rain was falling on the morning I visited Clarkson Covered Bridge, and the cozy ambience was palpable. The bridge stretched on for what felt like forever, and the rough wood trellis siding let in a brilliant shine and bathed the geometry in a warm and sincere southern glow, appearing almost as a light at the end of the tunnel -- a powerful piece of symbolism from our third-to-final tour stop.
